Tutoring Services
I feel like I have been teaching all my life ~ just as I feel like I am always learning something new!
During the 30 years I worked for the Federal government, I taught a variety of leadership and technical classes to other employees. I also conducted national seminars to tax professionals, ranging in size from a dozen to 800+ attendees. Since I began my second career in 2004, I have been certified by a national learning center to teach K-12 subjects and SAT-prep; was hired by Fairfax County Public Schools to teach SAT classes; and have logged tutoring hours with more than 200 students. I specialize in providing homework help and tutoring math, including Algebra 1 and Geometry. I am fortunate to have established long-term relationships with families for whom I provide tutoring services, some for as long as 6 years.
I am committed to working with students to find their own unique way of tackling difficult subjects. When it comes to preparing for the ACT and SAT for college admittance, I provide the strategies and encouragement for students to confidently take the exams independently.
K-12 Subjects
I am experienced at working with students at all grade levels: elementary, middle and high school, and some college. I specialize in math, elementary and middle school levels.
Don't hesitate to contact me for any tutoring needs; I will gladly provide referral information if your student requires help in a subject I do not regularly teach.
Homework Help
I have always been one of those people who enjoys doing school work! This has served me well when I am providing general homework help to students.
I am also patient and enthusiastic and, more importantly, recognize that we all learn differently. When I first meet students, I often ask them to complete a brief exercise to determine their learning style: visual? auditory? tactile? kinesthetic? or a combination? With the students' input, I am then able to assess how they have been doing their homework, what's worked and what hasn't. I can help fill the gaps by suggesting study techniques that fit their way of learning.
Standardized
Test Preparation
Tests are standardized ~ students are not.
For almost 10 years I have been tutoring students as they prepare to take the SAT or ACT for college admittance. I have found that scheduling one-on-one time with a tutor to prepare for these exams is highly effective for many busy students.
During my sessions with students, I focus on teaching test-taking strategies. The students set goals (often based on the requirements of their desired college or university) and work with me (and independently) through review and practice to position themselves to do their personal best on the exam.
